Algeria applies to join BRICS ahead of summit, to give $1.5 bn

Algeria has applied to join BRICS ahead of the group's summit in Johannesburg in August and has submitted a request to become a shareholder member of the BRICS Bank with a $1.5-billion contribution. Over 40 countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS, a senior South African government official said. BRICS currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
